All Super Sixes have been assigned to an Individualised Reading stage, using the scheme devised by Cliff Moon and published by the Reading and Language Information Centre.
The IR stages relate to the phases of learning to read used in First Steps, and to the chronological ages of children of average reading ability, as follows:
Role-play reading | age 4 - 5 | IR stages 0 - 3 |
Experimental reading | age 5 - 6 | IR stages 4 - 6 |
Early reading | age 6 - 7 | IR stages 7 and 8 |
Established early reading | age 7 - 8 | IR stages 9 and 10 |
Transitional reading | age 9 - 10 | IR stages 11 and 12 |
Independent reading | age 11+ | IR stage 13 |
The words "average", "low" and "high" after the stage number in the super sixes catalogue, refer to the interest level of the book, to take account of the fact that reading ability does not always correspond with chronological age.
Average - the IR stage and the interest level are broadly compatible - e.g. the "Happy Families" series is at IR stage 9 and is targeted at children of about 7 years old.
Low - the book can be read and enjoyed by a younger child than the IR stage would suggest - e.g. Shirley Hughes's "Alfie" books were written to be read to pre-school children, and can therefore be enjoyed by 4- or 5-year-olds reading at IR stage 9.
High - the book can be read and enjoyed by older children than the IR stage would suggest - e.g. the "Chillers" series is also at IR stage 9, but is targeted at reluctant and less able 9- to 11-year-olds. NB: "high" at IR stage 13 is used to indicate books more suited to Key Stage 3 pupils.
